About what's a good time leave Las Vegas to travel to San Diego

What's a good time leave Las Vegas to travel to San Diego?
My friend told me to waith until midnight to leave if I don't want to deal with horrible traffic. He's a truck driver so he's traveled that route alot but he's also pretty dramatic. So should I listen to him or leave earlier? We live in Oklahoma and the worst traffic we've driven in is in Houston Texas. I'm not traveling until March 17th.

Yep, he is right. One time when i was living in L.A. we took off in the night and there were tons of people on the road. Once in Vegas all hotels were booked. We found out there was a grateful dead concert in town. People loved to follow them when they were around especially in Cali. ha ha At any rate with it being New Year's Eve there is going to be traffic galore! First of all your going to have the wonderful rush hour traffic that is like any other in the nation that you do NOT want to or need to see. This goes on in the morning regardless if there is a holiday or not. You sit for a minimum of 2 hours if your lucky. If you wait until afternoon then you would not get to Vegas until evening and then it will be rush hour in Vegas and the traffic there is a bizz natch too. Went through there recently. Nightmare and we weren't even near the casinos. If you leave at a late hour you can relatively breeze through the desert and not have to worry about stop and go and make it in the time you are supposed to. I would still plan on hitting holiday traffic even at that hour simply because of all the action that will be going on and people are going to be thinking the same thing. Truck drivers are usually dramatic for a reason. *edit* just realized you are going opposite direction. However, what i said still stands. It is the same either way you go because San Diego will be partying too. ha ha

From Las Vegas to San Diego has always been an easy trip for us. Leaving on a Mon thru Thurs, we have breakfast at our hotel and leave Vegas around 10am. Never have had really bad traffic. It's going the other way that we have to be more careful.
