Why is it that when I travel to Las Vegas and stay in one of those grand hotels, is there ALWAYS Static Shock?
First of all, why is there always static electricy in Las Vegas? LIke when i'm pushing the elevator buttons, or just opening the door to my room, I'm always scared that I will get a shock. WHy does this happen, and is there a way to preven it?

Answer 1 :
The "processed" atmosphere of hotels substantially reduces the humidity (amount of water in the air). The higher the dryness of the air, the higher the occurrence of static electricity.
Answer 2 :
Static shock often occurs because you drag your feet on the carpet, socks or shoes, and electrons either escape or join onto your body giving you a charge. When this charge is released... you get shocked, well the charge travels from you to the object, because you have have a charge and the other object may or may not... repulsion, attraction,... To reduce your 'shockage' try not to drag your feet...
Answer 3 :
Lack of humidity helps to transmit static shock. The lack of humidity has nothing to do with "processed" hotel air, but the fact that Las Vegas is in the middle of a DESERT. I used to live in Phoenix, a city notoriously in the middle of a dry, arid, humidity-less, DESERT, and I used to get shocked all the time walking around just about any where. Unfortunately I never found a way to stop it.
Answer 4 :
Static is more likely to build up and discharge in dry conditions, and surprisingly if you wear rubber soled shoes. Touching something that is likely to give you a shock with a metal object such as a coin or key first will prevent you from getting shocked.
Answer 5 :
Dry air plus synthetics equals static. There really isn't a cure. Try to wear cottons or use an anti-static such as static guard. They'll help some. To avoid shocks from touching things, try to use a pencil, key, or other object to touch things first. It will drain off some of the charge and if there is a discharge, it won't be directly on your skin. If you are wearing rubber soled shoes, such as running shoes, don't scuff them on the carpet. This raises a ton of static.
